Awkwardness Is The Enemy

I’ve been a Wedding DJ for over ten years and I’ve learned one thing above everything else: “Awkwardness is the enemy!”  I say it so much that it has become the unofficial company slogan amongst our DJs.

The statement is so powerful we use it in training as the foundation of our DJ’s learning experience.

What do I mean by this?  Think about every bad social event you’ve ever been to.  Not just weddings, but family reunions, sweet sixteens, Bar and Bat Mitzvah’s, luaus, cook-outs, Christmas parties, and dance parties.  Hell, not just “social events”, think about bad restaurants or bars you’ve been too.  Ok, now think about why it was bad?  Was it bad food?  Bad music?  How about poor lighting, or an emcee that couldn’t pronounce names correctly?

Personally as a DJ, the idea of a bad sound or PA system always makes me cringe.  Feedback, improperly EQ’d, or not enough volume, or even worse, too much. All of these situations are what cause “bad” events.

One word can explain why: awkwardness!  It's awkward to be at an event with bad food. It is awkward to have a first dance ruined by feedback or an awful DJ.  It is awful to be in a room full of harsh pale florescent lighting, instead of warm uplighting.

Comfort is King

Imagine everyone dancing to a good song, only to be followed up with the Hokey Pokey.  Awkward, right? I learned a long time ago that people don’t have to be dancing to have a good time; all they need is to be comfortable.  If they are comfortable, they will stay and enjoy themselves.  If they are comfortable, they will drink, eat, mingle and truly have a good time.  It’s the awkwardness that makes people wanting to rather be at home on the couch watching Law and Order reruns.

When planning your wedding, think about creating a comfortable environment.  Think about the warmth of the lighting, the comfort of good food, the flow of the layout and yes above all, for the love of God, do not skimp on the entertainment.

Pay the money to get a good, solid, DJ.  Not Uncle Joe that just got a new iPad, and not your favorite cousin Phil that really wants to listen to his favorite Pandora station.  Make no mistake… nothing can ruin an event more or make a wedding more awkward than a bad DJ. What's more, most DJs are a "one-man show." Meaning, cousin Phil gets the flu and you're left with no backup.

Well, you're in luck. Island Sound believes awkwardness is the enemy, and that comfort is king. You'll have a fun time. Rest assured, because our DJs are hand-picked, heavily vetted, and professionally trained in-house. We have over 30 DJs on staff, so in the case of an emergency, you won't be left without music to walk down the aisle to.

Our packages are inclusive, too! Everything you need, nothing you don't.
