If you're like many couples, choosing your first dance song has left you scratching your head and completely overwhelmed. You want your first dance to be perfect- tasteful, meaningful, and true to your personalities. That's why we're sharing these guidelines to help, and listed our favorite first dance songs from over the years.

1: Memories

First, go down memory lane! Was there a song playing on your first date? Or the moment you first locked eyes? What song comes on the radio and makes you think of your partner?
My husband and I started dating in high school, and if I hadn't chosen the song we ended up dancing to, the close runner-up was "Green Eyes" by Coldplay. I remember having my iPod touch and earbuds in, thinking "I'm gonna marry this guy one day." (Yes, my husband has green eyes.)

2: First Dance Song Lyrics

Next, check the lyrics! Does it make sense? Sure, it may have a great tune and sound romantic, but does the meaning match? There's quite a few seemingly forever love songs that are actually about breakups!
My husband and I were watching TV one day, and a Corona beer commercial came on, and the song playing was perfect. We looked at each other and said "That's it!"
Our first dance song was "Let's Be Still" by The Head and The Heart.

3: First Dance Song Pace

Lastly, consider the pace of the song. This is a personal decision- mainly pertaining to personality.

Fast Songs: Choreograph and practice ahead of time! It makes for a truly memorable, exciting experience, and dance lessons leading up to the event is a great way to have quality time and exercise together.

Slow Songs: You have the opportunity to pause together and have an intimate few minutes before the party gets started. If you don't like crying in front of a crowd, this is probably not your option!

Whether or not you opt for a slow song, we 100% recommend scheduling intentional time together during the wedding day- whether that be a first look, slow first dance, a head table to share dinner together, or a private last dance.
